Hello Music Movie family! Well it’s official, the success of Iron Man 3 last opening weekend has kicked in the door and ushered in the summer blockbuster season. And I must admit, it is a very good film and well worth the penny to view in theaters. But if you’re looking for a more comedic romp, or a fun date movie this weekend, I would highly recommend Tyler Perry presents PEEPLES, written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism (ATL, Drumline) and starring Craig Robinson (The Office, Hot Tub Time Machine), Kerry Washington (Scandal, A Thousand Words), and David Alan Grier (In Living Color, The Woodsman).
Robinson stars as lead character Wade Walker, an “average Joe” who decides to surprise his girlfriend Grace (Washington) and propose during a holiday weekend in the Hamptons with her affluent family. Problems arise, mostly due to the tension that brews between Wade and his girlfriend’s father, played hilariously by David Alan Grier. I must admit when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it was going to be “Jumping The Broom meets Meet The Parents.” The film, however, does stand on its own merit by bringing some new things, and laughs, to the table. There were a few moments of cheese, especially the Moby Dick Day scene (you know I won’t spoil!), but I really did enjoy most of the movie overall.
I also enjoyed the chemistry between and the variety of the film’s cast, including Wade’s brother Chris (played by the very funny Malcolm Barrett) and the divine S. Epahtha Merkerson as family matriarch Daphne Peeples rocked! Ms. Merkerson’s comedic timing was spot on, and she even belts out a tune. There were also great cameos by legendary, veteran actors Melvin Van Peebles and Diahann Carrol. And it was really cool to see former child star Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris, Let It Shine) as Grace’s younger, socially misfit brother Simon.
In short, I would give PEEPLES a B- for great laughs, a fantastic cast, and an overall fun story. The movie opens today, May 10, nationwide. You can get more information about the film and view the trailer at www.peeplesmovie.com. Make sure to stop back by and share your thoughts if you go check it out!

Good luck everyone!
Sparks fly when Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) crashes the preppy Peeples annual reunion in the Hamptons to ask for their precious daughter Grace’s (Kerry Washington) hand in marriage. Wade might be a fish-out-of-water among this seemingly perfect East Coast clan, but he’s not about to let himself flounder. Instead, in a wild weekend of fun, dysfunction and hilarious surprises, Wade is about to discover there’s room for all kinds of Peeples in this family, no matter their differences. Writer and first-time director Tina Gordon Chism (writer of DRUMLINE) joins forces with Tyler Perry to present a laugh-out-loud look at the family ties that freak us out . . . but bind us together with love.
TEMPTATION: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor opens today 3/29/13 and, I must be honest considering I am a fan of Tyler Perry’s films (albeit not of the past few), I expected much more. So let me cut to the chase by summing this movie up in one word: PREDICTABLE. Part of the ending was evident to many in the theater in the first scene. I felt the urge, and succumbed, to tweet within the first 30 minutes. Now if you follow me, you know I’m against spoilers, but I will say the following about several cast members: Jurnee Smollet is a fave of mine and was pretty good in her delivery; Robbie Jones (opposite Jurnee as Harley) was good; Ella Joyce was the phenomenal industry veteran that she is; Kim Kardashian plays the mean, rich girl (and since I don’t know her personally, I’m not sure how much of a stretch that is); and it’s best I stop there so I don’t move into mean girl territory myself. I’m hoping to feel differently about the upcoming Tyler Perry presentsPEEPLES, written by Tina Gordon Chism, which will open in theaters May 10th.
On a scale of one to five stars, I’m giving TEMPTATION a two. But make no mistake, it is Resurrection Day/Easter weekend and this movie will most likely make a ton of money, courtesy of Tyler’s faithful fan base. For those seeking more info and showtimes for the film, check out the plot synopsis and website links below.

What’s up Music Movie Lovers! Alright, everyone who’s been faithfully following this blog knows that the Alex Cross movie project was the topic of my first post last year, right? Well, the time has come to find out if Mr. Tyler Perry can make those faithful Alex Cross fans, myself included, believers and put his stamp on the Alex Cross franchise. So, who wants to join me next Tuesday at the Philly screening? I’ve got a limited number of tickets, so those who email me quickest at firstname.lastname@example.org will luck out 🙂
Alex Cross opens in theaters on October 19th. You can check out a synopsis and movie trailer for the film at: www.alexcrossmovie.com. I will announce the giveaway winners this Saturday 10/13/12.
Now let me preface this by first stating, I do like Tyler Perry. I wasn’t a fan of his plays prior to Diary of aMad Black Woman the movie, and didn’t know anything about his shows beforehand, but that movie singlehandedly made me a believer in his ministry. Yes, I said ministry. I believe Tyler has a calling to tell stories that spread messages of love, healing and forgiveness to the audience he was called to serve. Whether you’re a fan of his or not, there is an audience that understands and appreciates his work. Although I confess this to be true, there are some movies of his I just did not like (mainly Why Did I Get Married Too and Madea’s Big Happy Family).
Okay, now that you know where I stand in the infamous Tyler Perry debate let me express this: I am not sure if Tyler is the best fit to play the beloved James Patterson character Detective Alex Cross! I mean, I was already shaken stirred and ready to be poured when they made the first two movies (Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider) with Morgan Freeman. If you know anything about the series, Alex Cross is supposed to be this cross between a young Mohammed Ali, a handsome physically fit type, and a clever intellectual. I’m not saying Tyler isn’t handsome, but really a young version of Mohammed I don’t see. At least they are casting someone who is in the age range of the Cross character, unlike Mr. Freeman. But I am not sure I will believe Tyler as the clever, clinically trained, forensic detective who is easy on the eyes all while taking care of his elderly “Nana Mama” and two young children. And it doesn’t help that the Idris Elba driven Alex Cross vehicle got the can, but not before getting me all excited about his take on the character. Guess I’ll have to wait until Fall of 2012 or Spring 2013, the projected release for the Rob Cohen directed Perry version, to be the judge. For my fellow fans of the Cross series, what are your thoughts? Does Tyler have the acting chops to pull it off? What was your favorite novel of the series? Until next thought, Thomasena
