“I feel like I’m taking crazy pills” is what Will Ferrell’s character Jacobim Mugatu famously said in the original Zoolander movie when he couldn’t understand why people couldn’t see that all of Derek Zoolander’s model poses were the same look, that by his opinion none were original. Well after seeing the sequel, maybe we all will need some crazy pills to be able to enjoy ZOOLANDER 2.
Zoolander 2, as a sequel, fights the uphill battle that most comedies go through when trying to be better than the first, new jokes vs the same comedic tropes that worked so well in the first movie. Rarely does lightning strikes twice and in this case, Zoolander 2 greatly misses the mark.
While this film does have some funny moments, (mostly the large amount of cameos who perhaps are the best thing about the movie) the silliness of Zoolander 2 can’t save a very predictable premise and a story that keeps adding storylines in a desperate attempt to make a good movie.
What Zoolander 2 becomes is a well-intentioned gumbo stew as it throws in all of the original characters, the old jokes and situations from the previous film, and add in some non-original storylines and voilà… what did they make? Bad gumbo aka a bad movie!!!
With 14 years in-between movies, perhaps that was a long time between visiting the fashion world of Zoolander and, much like a clothing line that has finally gone out of style, Zoolander 2 is way past its expiration date. If you decide to go to the movies to go see Zoolander 2… don’t forget to take your crazy pills!
