Though the backstory behind the events in Women Talking is violent, the film is not. We never see the violence that the women have experienced. We see only short glimpses of the aftermath. Instead, we watch a community of women come together as they must decide, in a very short space of time, what their collective response will be.
Sarah Polley, writer/director WOMEN TALKING
Adapted from a novel that was inspired by actual events WOMEN TALKING is one of my favorite films from 2022-23. Not only does it have a standout cast that features Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Judith Ivey, and Frances McDormand to name a few, it is an engaging story of decision-making in the presence of fear, the power of collective action and a reliance and belief in oneself to overcome the unknown.
“Women Talking” focuses on a group of women in a small religious community who gather to decide whether to forgive the attackers and continue to risk unaddressed and permissible sexual violence against women and their female children, remain and fight, or leave with their children and start a brand-new life out of their own.
The film is a fascinating exploration of sexual trauma, religious accountability, and polarized personalities and, with a runtime of an hour and forty-four minutes, it is well worth the journey to see in which area the group’s decision will land.
Nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture, “Women Talking” is available on Digital and was released last Tuesday, March 7 on Blu-Ray and DVD.
