MMT QUICK REVIEW: RIDE ALONG 2

ride along 2

Happy Friday MMT Family! This is officially my first review of the new year – but we’ve had a couple of giveaways and quick looks, so I’ve been around! 🙂 I was able to screen RIDE ALONG 2 earlier this week – shout out to some of the subscribers I spoke with, including Carrie O’Berry, Sakinah Parks, Terry Williams and Ade Bolden. I also read what a few advanced screening winners shared either online or via email about the film, but here’s my take.

First of all, let me share that I’ve just recently started working back in a physical office last week – after working from home for 15 months – so Tuesday was day one of this week, and it was long. Needless to say after arriving to the theater from work, and dealing with a minor miscommunication issue with seating arrangements, I was in bad need of a good laugh. And on that note, the movie didn’t disappoint.  Although not as funny as the first, “Ride Along 2” still displays the awkward, but great chemistry between Kevin Hart and Ice Cube – and that brings several great jokes along with it.

However, the sequel reaches a little too hard in some areas to get laughs, and thus becomes a bit more “lampoonish” than even the first – and not in a good way – so it loss me a little there. But I must admit, “Ride Along 2” is one of those rare films where I actually laughed harder in the theater at one scene that was heavily promoted in the trailers. Oft times, when too much is shown, it takes away from the scene. Not so in this case! And you know I don’t do spoilers, so I’ll just say look out for the “first” bulletproof vest scene!

And there weren’t as many cool cameos like in the first – see my review on Ride Along for a few of those names – but we did have two very prominent supporting players in actor/comedians Sherri Shepard and Ken Jeong. And the oh-so-handsome Benjamin Bratt was a pleasure to view on-screen, even as the bad guy!

All-in-all, “Ride Along 2” offers several good laughs and, like the first, is a great date film and/or night out with the guys/girls type of comedy. If there is a third to be made, I hope it redeems itself in the vain of a Lethal Weapon 4. Rush Hour 2 rocked, but we really didn’t need that third one – so let’s not go out like that Universal!

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts when you see the film family, so please share them in the comments. 🙂

Until next thought, Thomasena

Ride Along synopsis

For the past two years, high school security guard Ben (Kevin Hart) has been trying to show decorated detective James (Ice Cube) that he’s more than just a video game junkie who’s unworthy of James’ sister. When Ben finally gets accepted into the police academy, James invites him on a ride-along designed to scare the hell out of him and ultimately demonstrate if Ben has what it takes to take care of his sister. But when the wild night leads them to the most notorious criminal in the city, James will find that his new partner’s rapid-fire mouth is just as dangerous as the bullets speeding at it. Also starring John Leguizamo and Laurence Fishburne, Ride Along is an action-packed comedy with big thrills and even bigger laughs.

MMT Quick Review of ‘About Last Night’

About Last Night (photo: aboutlastnight-movie.com)

Happy Valentine’s Day MMT Family!  I pray everyone is doing something today that celebrates love, be it love of significant others, family or love of self!  And I have a great film recommendation, whether you’re going out on a date or just hanging with friends.  About Last Night starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall and Joy Bryant is a great romantic comedy best described by two words: smart and sexy.  A remake of the 1986 film of the same name, based on a David Mamet play and penned by Tim Kazurinsky, this updated screenplay penned by Leslye Headland highlights the ups and downs of love and casual dating in modern fashion and fun.

The chemistry between the leads was spot-on, but the highlight for me was watching Kevin Hart and Regina Hall match wits and passion on-screen.  Fresh off a three-week top of the box office win with his last film “Ride Along,” stopped only by last week’s opening of “The Lego Movie,” it will be interesting to see how well Hart’s latest offering fares.  But considering the nature of this holiday weekend, I’m betting he will at least come in the top three if not one of the top two spots (it’s also President’s Day weekend, kids have a three-day, and Lego is still going to be a favorite along with another romantic release “Winter’s Tale”).  And quick segue, while speaking of “Ride Along,” for those who missed my Examiner piece, check it out and note what producer Will Packer (who also produced this film and is teamed with both Hart and Ealy for the upcoming “Think Like A Man Too”) says about Hart’s amazing work ethic (see slideshow).

Back to the film at hand, I also really enjoyed the soundtrack, which highlighted the highs and lows of love as well with offerings such as “What You Won’t Do For Love” by Bobby Caldwell, “This Time” by John Legend and a new offering by Legend entitled “A Million.”

I certainly believe this one is worth the price of admission to see in theaters, and it makes a great girls or guys-night out movie for those who aren’t doing the partner thing this weekend.  “About Last Night” is in theaters nationwide today.  Check out the synopsis and trailer in my previous giveaway post here; and get additional information at the film’s official website by clicking here.

Alright family, that’s it for now and you know the drill!  Stop back and let me know your thoughts after you see the film.  Tell me what your favorite Hart line was, because there’s a treasure chest full in this one! 🙂

Until next thought, Thomasena

MMT Quick Review of ‘Ride Along’

Ride Along (photo: ridealong.com)

Hey MMT Family!  Yeah, I know this should have been posted yesterday but it has been a long, long, LOOOONG week!  I pray your week has run smoother than mine, but all blessings be to God I am still here to write about it; so in the end, I am ALL GOOD!  How many of you checked out my Examiner piece from the “Ride Along” red carpet première here in Philly?  You saw I was able to show Kevin those old prom photos right?  See, for those of you who didn’t, you have to read those Examiner pieces, I put up some good stuff! 😉

Review wise, I’m going to keep this short and sweet.  Ride Along is HILARIOUS!  The chemistry between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart is spot on.  They make a great and awkward duo just like their characters suggest.  There are really cool cameos in the film including the guy from that popular “why you asking all them questions” vid Emmanuel Hudson, Angie Stone, Gary Owens, and Laurence Fishburne.  And it also has a great soundtrack to boot.  It is the perfect “let’s go for the laughs, have a fun date/guys/girls night out” movie.

I most enjoyed seeing Kevin have a feature-length vehicle that he carried, star power wise along with Ice Cube, and he did it very well in this film.  I am convinced “Ride Along” is going to make a ton of money this weekend, and I’m sure Universal Pictures will plan a sequel à la Rush Hour or Lethal Weapon.  It has the makings to last at least to a part three! 😉

And for those who are curious about those prom photos I showed Kevin, well I won’t share any with my relative’s face but I will share this one…

Kevin Hart Prom watermarked

Yeah, he made that face even back in high school! LOL 🙂

Alright family you know the drill.  Stop back, leave a thought or two and let me know what you think about the film.  What are your thoughts about a sequel?  Can’t wait to hear them!

Until next thought, Thomasena
