MMT Recommends: Summer Fun with Family Events at the Mann Center

Happy Father’s Day MMT Fam! If you’re looking for summer fun that the entire family can enjoy, and you’re in the Philly area, you can look no further than the historical Mann Center for the Performing Arts! Celebrating its 40th anniversary season, the Mann has a fantastic lineup in store – from casting enchanting spells at the world première of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,™ to traveling through time with Marty McFly during the screening of Back to the Future, to gazing in wonder as the night sky is illuminated by fireworks, and much more. For all of these shows, attendees are invited to pack a picnic for the whole family and enjoy summer at the Mann.

TUESDAY, JUNE 21: 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Mann with The Philadelphia Orchestra with Fireworks

This special anniversary performance will feature music drawn from the repertoire played during the first season at the Mann in 1976.  The evening will include Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 played by rising star pianist and Curtis Institute artist Daniel Hsu, and the brilliant Maurice Ravel orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition.

THURSDAY, JUNE 23: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with The Philadelphia Orchestra (World Premiere)

The first performance of the 2016 Movies @ the Mann Series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone™ with The Philadelphia Orchestra is sure to delight audiences. The Harry Potter™ film series is one of those once-in-a-lifetime cultural phenomena that continues to delight millions of fans around the world. Audiences will relive the magic of the film in high-definition on a giant screen while hearing the orchestra perform John Williams’ unforgettable score. Movies @ the Mann are presented by Qatar Airlines.

FRIDAY, JUNE 24:  Tchaikovsky Spectacular with The Philadelphia Orchestra with Fireworks

This all-Tchaikovsky program will begin with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, the most dramatic of Tchaikovsky’s last symphonies.  Its recurrent motif of ‘fate’ ties this tumultuous masterpiece together. The evening will also feature Swan Lake, the lushest and most romantic of Tchaikovsky’s three ‘story’ ballets, and the 1812 Overture-complete with fireworks.

SATURDAY, JULY 9: Back to the Future with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

Power up your DeLorean…recharge your flux capacitor… and get ready to celebrate the 30th anniversary of an unforgettable movie classic as you’ve never seen nor heard it before. Now, fans old and new will experience the thrill of this time-traveling, coming-of-age story in a whole new way – on a giant screen with a full symphony orchestra performing Alan Silvestri’s dazzling musical score live in sync with the movie.  Audiences will also be in for an exclusive treat:  approximately 20 minutes of brand new music added by award-winning composer Silvestri to the film’s score especially for this unique live orchestra presentation. Movies @ the Mann are presented by Qatar Airlines.

SUNDAY, JULY 10: Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra brings to life all new arrangements and carefully timed visuals from recent and classic Pokémon video games. Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions has become the must-see video game concert of the year, giving fans and newcomers of all ages a chance to experience the evolution of the Pokémon franchise like never before. This performance is produced by Princeton Entertainment.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20: Firebird: Reimagined with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Janni Younge of South Africa’s renowned Handspring Puppet Company (North American Premiere)

The Mann will present the North American première of this multidisciplinary interpretation of Igor Stravinsky’s orchestral score for the 1910 ballet score The Firebird performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra. Firebird: Reimagined will link South African and Russian traditions and integrate music, dance, movement and puppetry. The Philadelphia Orchestra’s performance of the complete score for The Firebird ballet score, conducted by Cristian Măcelaru, will be accompanied by a new interpretation of the original Ballets Russes staging with larger-than-life puppets inspired by the artistry of the Broadway sensation War Horse and created by Janni Younge of South Africa’s renowned Handspring Puppet Company.  In the first half of the evening, Grammy Award-winning, South African vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo will perform.

SATURDAY, JULY 23: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towerswith The Philadelphia Orchestra

The final performance of the Movies at the Mann series for 2016, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers will transport audiences of all ages. The second film of the beloved trilogy will be shown on a giant screen with The Philadelphia Orchestra and two full choirs performing Howard Shore’s epic score live.  See the epic motion picture as you never have before, only at the Mann. Movies @ the Mann are presented by Qatar Airlines.
