I must say, the writers’ room and the overall thought machine over at Marvel must be a magnificent thing to witness. I wasn’t sure how I would take to its first original Disney+ series WANDAVISION, which premieres on the streaming giant tomorrow January 15, but after screening the first three out of six episodes I am a believer and fan!
The first episode finds Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) newly married and settling down in a new suburban home to start their lives together in the… 50’s? Yes, Avengers fans, the 50’s and I can’t wait to know how this is possible, since the show picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Billed as “a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” the series is a fusion of old-school comedy, superhero action and, at least in the first three episodes, mystery as both Wanda and Vision start to ponder their seemingly perfect (for the most part) surroundings and wonder what truly is happening – and what or who is behind it.
Now this is already a non-spoiler site, but both Disney and Marvel need me to be tight lipped about this project, so there isn’t much more that I will say. But if you’re a fan of Marvel, or if classic comedy with a mix of superhero action and suspense sounds enticing, this is certainly a must-watch.
I only watched three episodes and am already sold with the homages to The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, and I believe the third episode displays The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, and The Monkees vibes – all blasts from my past and reminders of a time of great family TV viewing.
I rate it 4 out of 5 on the MMTrometer.
WANDAVISION premieres January 15 on Disney+.
Until next thought, Thomasena
