MMT Quick Review of TROLLS with junior contributor Jayla

Trolls

You know the old troll stories, which typically featured an unattractive critter/being who didn’t want to be disturbed or was intent on gobbling someone up? TROLLS is not that – well, at least they’re not the ones doing the gobbling! In this version of the troll lore, they are a happy race of creatures who spread joy wherever they’re found – except in the land of the Bergens, who believe they can only find happiness by “eating” trolls.

Sounds pretty morbid, I know, but it really is a cute and well-told story with wonderful lessons for children – including tolerance, kindness, and happiness. And with a soundtrack (produced by Justin Timberlake) that features old and new songs to further the narrative, the movie is attractive to, and fun for, both kids and adults alike. This moment in the film – featuring Anna Kendrick as Princess Poppy and Timberlake as the oddly, moody troll Branch – almost took me out with laughter…

“Trolls” also features the voices of the very funny (even as a troll) James Corden as Biggie, Russell Brand as Creek, Gwen Stefani as DJ Suki,  Kunal Nayyar as Guy Diamond, and comedian Ron Funches as the extremely funny Cooper. And Christine Baranski and Zooey Deschanel are hilarious as the Bergen characters Chef and Bridget respectively.

Her exact wording was, “Sena, I liked ALL of it!” In typical Jayla fashion (remember she’s four), she laughed appropriately, and was quiet and watched the film intently during tense scenes (remember our story from Kung Fu Panda 3). But when all conflict was resolved, she happily (pun intended) celebrated the ending by dancing during the credits! And her mother shared that she has requested, and watched, “Trolls” videos on You Tube all week since the screening.

Overall, TROLLS is a great pick for the family, with solid lessons and a tight soundtrack. The movie is rated PG for some rude humor, so take into consideration when choosing for the itty-bitty ones. But I didn’t find it too inappropriate in any manner. To me, the trolls themselves are a modern-day, more soulful, version of “The Smurfs,” and the Bergens are Gargamel times a village!

I would recommend this for all ages and I certainly am looking forward to owning a copy when it is released on digital/DVD. Let me know what you think after you see the film!

Until next thought, Thomasena
