Parabellum: a semiautomatic gun or machine gun. Origin – early 20th century: the name of a German make of gun, from Latin para bellum (from para! ‘prepare!’ (imperative of parare) + bellum ‘war’) in the phrase si vis pacem, para bellum ‘if you want peace, prepare for war.’ (oxforddictionary.com)
And what a war we are offered in the latest John Wick installment JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 PARABELLUM. Starting immediately after chapter 2, uber assassin Wick (Keanu Reeves) has a 14 million dollar bounty on his head, after breaking international assassin rules by killing on neutral territory (The Continental) and being labeled “excommunicado.” With a gang of professional hit men on his trail, and no allowable assistance, Wick must find a way to get through the impending war, find a solution, or pay the ultimate cost.
With amazing performances by both returning cast members like Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, and Laurence Fishburne, and newcomers like Anjelica Huston and Academy Award winner Halle Berry, the movie gives solid acting along with tight martial arts performances – but note, it is just as if not more so violent than the previous installments, so this is not a film for the faint of heart!
Speaking of newcomers, I must take a minute to applaud Ms. Halle Berry doing the darn thing at age 52 with her fight scenes, and my fellow Virgo brother Keanu Reeves at age 54 as well. You know we don’t do spoilers, but I will say just wait for their shared on-screen fight time, it is bananas!
And can I add that, as both an action film and animal lover, the animal scenes were tailored made for folk like myself.
Although I attended a media screening, that seemed comprised of mostly fan boys and a few of us girls, the critics were clapping and audibly enjoying the film, and I have no doubt it resembled how most theaters will sound when it opens tomorrow.
One great thing about the movie is you don’t have to be a John Wick fan, nor have seen the films prior, to follow along and enjoy – the bounty on his head and the initial reasons he pledge revenge are explained. But if you do get a chance to watch the first two you are in for a fun ride, especially with the second.
Another cool thing is screenwriter Derek Kolstad’s witty ability to insert humor that allows the film to joke about its premise and still have the audience fully engaged and signed up for the payoff.
In short, “John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum” wastes no time jumping back into the action after the second chapter, and is filled with great fight choreography and funny quips. If you don’t like thrills, and want character depth, this will not be your cup of tea. But for the rest of you, I highly recommend that you buy your tickets, get great seats, grab a snack, sit back and prepare for war! I rate this film 4 out of 5 beats on the MMTrometer.
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 PARABELLUM opens nationwide Friday, May 17.
Until next thought, Thomasena
PS – you can check out a clip of the film below. I promise it won’t spoil or take away anything but it will make us animal lovers happy!
