Hey MMT Family! I don’t know about anyone else, but Thank God It’s Friday! I will post a couple of articles tonight, both on my Examiner site (click link to go to subscribe) and MMT – including my interview with Michael Ealy and Megan Good from “Think Like A Man Too!” But, I wanted to give my quick opinion on the new film version of Jersey Boys directed by the legendary Clint Eastwood. Now, those of you who read my review of the play when it came to Philly know that I absolutely loved it and summed it up on one word – PHENOMENAL. Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much excitement watching the big screen version and felt that it didn’t translate as well as its theater counterpart.
The musical numbers were still cool, although not as fun, and the cast was great – which almost goes without saying with the likes of John Young Lloyd who originated the role of Valli and won a Tony for the Broadway musical, Christopher Walken who brings the tough and funny to the role of Gyp DeCarlo, and Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire‘s Lucky Luciano) who goes all out in the role of Tommy DeVito.
Yet, even with the great acting and music, I felt that the story was lengthy and way more subdued than I expected. And with respect to length, I am not referring to the 134 minute running time; as the blockbuster film musical “Dreamgirls” had a 130 minute running time and was translated way better to fit the big screen.
All in all, “Jersey Boys” is fair but I wouldn’t recommend spending money to see it in theaters; unless you’re a fan of the play and/or musicals as that will probably increase the chance that you will get some enjoyment from it. You can get additional info about the film and watch the trailer at the official movie website here.
Make sure you stop back and leave a comment to let me know what you thought of the film. 🙂
Until next thought family, Thomasena
I had a lot of similar thoughts, myself.
