“Summer of Soul” is hands down the best documentary I’ve watched this year, and also one of the most informative I’ve ever seen – which should be no surprise to those who read the MMT Quick Review that posted last Friday.
So, it was an absolute pleasure to sit down virtually with the AAFCA family and chat with musician/author/producer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who made his directorial debut with the July 2 Hulu release.
Discussing everything from how much research he performed, to the footage he still wishes to share, to what artists were scheduled but cancelled or wanted to perform but couldn’t, and why there’s no video of a teenage Luther Vandross making his stage debut, Questlove shares a lot of details and sheds new light while elaborating on the project.
I’d caution you to watch the documentary first, but it wouldn’t take away much if you didn’t – yet it will make the roundtable even more enjoyable. Either way, grab a snack, hit play, and enjoy.
Can’t wait to read your thoughts in the comments!
Until next thought, Thomasena
