MMT Quick Review: DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS THE MUSICAL on Broadway Philadelphia December 19-29

The most fun and family friendly show I’ve ever seen in a theater is the quickest synopsis I could give of the heartwarming “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical.” At its core, this musical telling of the classic story retains the message on the true spirit of Christmas, while providing some great chuckles along the way – many courtesy of Philip Huffman who is spot-on as the furry one we should hate but ultimately love, The Grinch!

In addition to nailing the grumpy mannerisms and making the robbery of gifts way to fun with his clever quips and delivery, Huffman’s singing voice and range is magnificent. And Fiona Quinn as Cindy Lou Who steals her scenes with an impeccably cute delivery and equally sweet singing voice.

And the harmony and quick thinking of the cast even made an unexpected set error seem unimportant – their composure shown after an important prop fell was truly remarkable and a testament to their unity and professionalism.

With timely references, like #GrinchLife, and a really fun audience sing along, this musical more than succeeds at audience inclusion. And in an extremely cool nod to Philly, Huffman took his final bow in an Eagles Jersey!

Themes of love, joy, forgiveness and friendship make this the perfect play for the entire family during the holidays. And with a 90-minute run time, it’s a good length for the tiny ones and those tiny attention spans.

DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS THE MUSICAL runs on Broadway Philadelphia at The Kimmel Center through December 29.

Until next thought, Thomasena
